“Where have you been?” Sal corners me.

“I could ask you the same question.” I throw my bag in the foyer and stare at him. “You know the fight’s been scheduled if you’re interested.”

Gruffness is normal for Sal so I take it with a grain of salt. “Yeah. You’ve got to fix this mess first, otherwise you won’t be alive to fight.”

Squaring my shoulders, I look at the older man and ascertain if he’s joking.

His glacial piercing gaze would tell me, no.

“Are you talking about those two dickheads you call soldiers? You should be disgusted at how they operate.” Raising my eyebrows and my voice, I won’t buckle under his stupidity. “When’s the last time you went with them on a job?”

“Listen and stay in the background is what you were ordered to do. If the Boss orders something, that’s what you do.”

“I don’t take orders well. You of all people should know. I refuse to listen to those fuckers.”

I walk away from Sal to go to Tomme’s office. Once again, my flesh is hot with an impending explosion, my fists curled beside me ready to go another round with daddy dearest.

Shoving the door open, I give him no respect. Deciding to run this family is a conscious decision, one I question myself about daily. Father made a similar one years ago to stay hiding. Respect is earned and we are still far from mutual respect.

“Yes.” Soft, peaceful music surrounds me, contrasting with my furious tone.

“Chuck?” There’s some shuffling.

It’s not the rough voice I’m expecting, but a light, breezy sweet voice. “Fiorella?” My stomach curls in upon itself from the tension doubling within me. Why is mother here? She should be far away from this organization, continuing her past twenty-eight years of isolation from them.

Searching her eyes, I want to run to her and scoop her away from this dangerous family, protecting her like she sheltered me, but my mind is overriding my body. She betrayed me and I’m hurt, so I’m sulking.

“Come and sit.” Tomme is sitting next to her slim frame, holding Mother’s pale hand.

I pace, breathing heavily and then sit on a chair opposite them. “Why are you here?” Grinding my teeth, drawing my eyebrows in. “You better not have summoned her here.” Say the words I did and I will knock him flat on the floor. I don’t give a fuck who this man is. Bringing my mother into this ruthless place is wrong.

“I asked her the same question.” There’s a sadness on his face looking at Fiorella who is dressed in a low cut red dress, extending past her knees. Her stylish dark curled hair flows down her shoulders and she’s applied her makeup like she does every day to perfection. Fiorella is a stunning woman and would leave any man breathless.

“I came myself.” A small smile creeps on her face, looking at the man she once loved. Dressed in his usual dark suit, there’s a hint of Mother’s red lipstick on his lips. “I needed to speak to Tomme.
